Hmm, let see now…I need to come up with a topic for a standalone, interactive feature article, but what to do, what to do? I could:

  • show the wonderful yet far too stressful world of independent webcomic development
  • reveal the truths of indie game development
  • shed some light on the competitive Smash Bros. scene

Now that that’s decided, what do I really know about Smash and its overzealous following? Well, for starters, I’m one of them, so I get it. I can also talk about all the “jargon” that comes with playing such a game for so long, such as teching, wave-dashing, dash-dancing, l-cancelling, smash-cancelling, and the infamous short hop. There’s also the different tiers of characters, countless strategies and play styles, and how to implement each of them properly. Of course, we can’t forget the players themselves.

Beyond that, there’s also the difference between Melee and Brawl competitive play and their respective enmity with each other. I can also compare and contrast the two fields, and how the transition between them is not an easy one. There’re also competitive stages, competitively-banned stages, caves of life, Randall, edge-guarding/hogging, and how to combat each character type based on weight and technique.

I feel like I’m forgetting something…Oh, yeah! The basic game mechanics themselves.

While this seems like a lot of information, I’m still missing some stuff, namely:

  • What players think of tiers and competitive vs casual play
  • Why players choose the characters and strategies they do
  • How certain advanced techniques are pulled off properly

This ought to be a really fun thing to make, but there’s only one thing missing, and, unfortunately, I can’t do anything about it:

  1. This would be a very interesting / entertaining read! Especially at our school, consisting of a large quantity of gamers, this topic would be very popular. I played smash casually, but never knew anything about the competitive scene. I would love to hear about the higher tiers of play, and what kind of tournaments / prizes are offered. Some gamer interviews would also be interesting to hear about specific play styles, favorite characters, etc. Can’t wait to read!

  2. I can’t wait for this article to be finished…I always loved Smash Bros…and once actually got to play against someone who is a competitive Smash player…needless to say with me not being one, he thoroughly whipped my a**. It will be an interesting read for sure.

  3. Super Smash Bros. is known by alot of people, but not many know theres a competitive side. (Wait, there is?) This would be a very interesting article to look forward to, because it is about a well known series, but also because of the different strategies and skills used.
